Bring your own casket

Under the Federal Trade Commission's Funeral Rule, we must accept — without any additional fee — any casket you purchase elsewhere. Vargas-London honors this rule fully. Whether you order online, build one yourself, or receive one from family, we will use it for the service at no surcharge.

How to choose

A casket is the single largest line item in a traditional funeral, so it's worth knowing a few things before you shop. These are the same points we walk families through in person.

Start with the service you want

The casket follows the service, not the other way around. A direct burial or cremation with no viewing only needs a simple combustible container. A graveside service benefits from something presentable but not elaborate. A traditional viewing and funeral calls for a casket you'd be comfortable seeing for several hours.

Wood vs. metal is a matter of preference

Despite what you may read, no casket — wood, steel, bronze, or copper — stops the natural processes of burial. Gasketed metal caskets slow moisture entry, but none are genuinely "sealed." Choose the material you find most fitting, not the one marketed as the most protective.

Check the gauge on metal, the species on wood

For steel caskets, a lower gauge number means thicker metal (18-gauge is heavier than 20-gauge). For wood caskets, ask whether it's solid hardwood or veneered — both are legitimate, but they're priced differently.

Online caskets are real, and they're welcome

Costco, Walmart, Trusted Caskets, and Overnight Caskets all ship directly to funeral homes and are often 30–50% less than what you'd pay at a traditional provider. Give them your delivery address and service date. We receive, inspect, and use it — no markup, no pushback.

Frequently asked

Do I have to buy the casket from you?

No. Federal law (the FTC Funeral Rule) prohibits any funeral home from refusing, or charging extra for, a casket you purchase elsewhere. Vargas-London follows this rule without exception.

Is a casket required for cremation?

Texas law requires a combustible, leak-resistant container — but not a traditional casket. Our cremation caskets and even a simple alternative container (around $95) both satisfy the requirement.

Does a "sealer" casket preserve the body?

No casket, sealed or unsealed, preserves a body indefinitely. Gasketed caskets slow moisture entry for a time, but the FTC requires funeral homes to disclose that no casket can prevent natural decomposition. Choose based on appearance and preference, not preservation claims.

Do I need a vault or outer burial container?

Texas does not require a vault by state law, but most cemeteries require some form of outer container to keep the ground from settling. Prices range from $695 for a basic concrete grave box to $2,500+ for a lined vault.

Can I see the caskets in person before deciding?

Yes. Our selection room is open by appointment — call (214) 738-4276 or contact us to schedule a visit. We can also walk you through options over video if you prefer not to come in.

Still deciding? We'll help.

Our care team will talk through the service you have in mind, your budget, and what fits best — with no pressure and no upselling. Compassion and affordability when you truly need it.
